Getting to Know Your Student Loan Servicers

Getting to Know Your Student Loan ServicerWhen you’re faced with repaying your student loans, have you ever asked yourself, “Just who am I dealing with?” or said to yourself, “I don’t know anything about my servicer.” We are so busy that sometimes we don’t have the time to read emails, or maybe we see an email in our inbox and we don’t recognize the name. It’s very easy to just dismiss them as junk mail to be deleted, or in other cases our computers mysteriously move emails to our junk and spam folders—and most of us don’t check those folders very often.

Your student loan servicers are important to know—they handle everything to do with your federal student loans. You’ll send your payments to them, you’ll talk with them when you move or change contact information, and you’ll reach out to them if you need to discuss how to make your payment more manageable. They will also be the ones who communicate with you by phone, email, or letters.

Here's Who You Need to Know

We’ve tried to take the guesswork out of getting to know your servicers by providing some helpful information on each. Getting to know your servicer can make for a positive relationship should you need any assistance going forward with your student loan(s). If you’re not sure who services your loans, be sure to visit www.nslds.ed.gov to get information about who services the loans and how to reach them.

Communicating With Your Servicer

If you do contact your servicer, keep in mind that to protect your personal information they will need to verify your identity each time you call. They will likely ask you for the following information:

  • First and last name
  • Account number or your Social Security Number
  • Date of birth
  • Current address, telephone number and email information

It‘s a good idea to set up an online account with your servicer. On each of the servicer websites, there will be an icon that gives you a starting point to create an online account.

Some questions that are commonly asked of servicers are as follows:

  • How do I make payments online? Can I set them up to be automatic?
  • Are there ways to help lower my interest rate?
  • My payments are too high—are there other payment plans available?
  • What’s the difference between forbearance and deferment?
  • I can’t make my payments? What options do I have?
  • I have loans with too many servicers. Can I consolidate my loans?

Remember, we want to make sure you’re armed with all of the information you need to make it a smooth process when going over account information. Be proactive, find out all you can regarding your student loans, and know that the process can be informative and helpful. Your servicers are there to help with any questions you have and to make it a positive experience.
